Turkish Human Rights Report: Violations of Human Rights Escalated in Southeast in 2003
The president of Prime Ministry Human Rights Commission Assistant Professor, Vahit Bicak, said "We should try to solve our problems ourselves."
(Today's Zaman, 06.02.2004) According to the 2003 Human Rights Report prepared by the Diyarbakir Branch of the Human Rights Association (IHD), violations of human rights increased in the Eastern and Southeastern Anatolian regions in 2003.
According to the IHD report, a total of 6,472 violations of rights occurred in 20 eastern and southeastern cities, 203 people were killed and 90 people were injured. Probation and torture are the leading violations of human rights according to the Diyarbakir IHD report.
The report indicates that bureaucrats who are against the European Union (EU) Adaptation Process are the primary reason for the increases. According to 2003 data from the Prime Ministry Human Rights Commission, 235 citizens applied to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) claiming that their rights were violated. In response to the ECHR applications, Turkey was ordered to pay TL 28 trillion as compensation to its citizens. The president of Prime Ministry Human Rights Commission Assistant Professor, Vahit Bicak, said "We should try to solve our problems ourselves."
