(Today's Zaman, 21.04.2004) The Prime Ministry Human Rights President, Vahit Bicak, has stated that his organization aims at reaching a modern civilization level in human rights, adding, "the demand has to come from individuals rather than the institution."
A meeting organized by the Commission for Europe and the European Congress with the partnership of Human Rights Presidency was held on Tuesday. Press representatives and media institutions participated in the event held at the Ankara Hilton Hotel for a project named, 'Forming Awareness on Human Rights and Democratic Principles'.
Bicak said at the meeting, "Therefore, citizens have to be conscious of human rights. That is the goal of this project-- to reach a human rights concept at the level of modern civilization in Turkey."
Bicak pointed out that they have focused on civil society organizations rather than public authorities in the councils to make national and municipal human rights institutions more active.
He indicated that 76 people nationwide in January submitted cases on 138 issues for unjust treatment as a human rights issue and in February, 62 people submitted 118 cases.
